What Is Yoga?

The word yoga means ‘union’ in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where Yoga originated. We can think of this union occurring between body, mind and spirit. Yoga is commonly referred to by its practice of physical postures and poses.

Is Yoga A Religion?

No. It is a philosophy that began an estimated 5,000 years ago. It is a framework for spiritual growth and mastery of the physical and mental body. You do not have to give up you own religious beliefs to practice Yoga.

Is Yoga Just Stretching?

It does involve stretching, but Yoga puts emphasis on alignment. Yoga teaches that it’s how properly you stretch over how far you stretch. Most poses incorporate the whole body in stretching and strengthening instead of just one isolated area. Yoga also teaches us to connect the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind to the rhythm of our breath.

Can I Do Yoga If I’m Not Flexible?

Yes. The point of yoga is not to show off how flexible you are, but to become more flexible and enjoy the many health benefits of Yoga.

I’m New To Yoga. What Classes Are Suitable For Me?

Anyone new to yoga or those that want a gentler class are welcome to join our Yoga Basics, Hatha 1or Gentle classes. These classes are suitable for everyone of all levels and abilities.

How Many Times Per Week Should I Practice?

You will experience the benefits of Yoga even if you only practice 1 hour per week. Certainly the more you practice the more benefits you will enjoy, so trying to practice two or three times a week is a good goal.

Why Are You Supposed To Refrain From Eating Two To Three Hours Before Class?

In practicing Yoga we twist from side to side, bend forwards and backwards, and upside down. If you have not fully digested your last meal it might become uncomfortable for you.

What Should I Wear?

Something practical. It should be soft and flexible and allow freedom of movement. You don’t want a top that falls over your head when you’re bending forward. Shorts, or pants that expose your feet are best.

What Should I Bring To Class?

You should bring your own Yoga mat, hand towel, and water if you wish, and your smile....
